Gambito Open #597

Gambito Open #597 on 1/26/13

29 players, another good turnout, here they are in pre-event rating order:
5 Masters: Dionisio Aldama, Cyrus Lakdawala, Varun Krishnan Ronald Bruno and Bruce Baker
6 Experts: Venkat Iyer, Raoul Crisologo, Aaron Wooten, Leonard Sussman, Bud Stamper and Elkaei Rivera
4 Class A: Daniel Zhu, Jason Arbeiter, Pejman Sagart and Ajay Krishnan
7 Class B: Hector Gonzales, Jerry Qu, Gurveer Singh, Chuck Ensey, Daniel Cook, Eliza Eggert and Anthony Harbone
4 Class C: Jesse Wang, David Narevsky, Stephen Zhu, Fred Cleveland
3 Class D/E: Mathew Wang, Cassidy Liu, Andrew Sung

We used a 3 point McMahon pairing system, where M=3, Exp & A=2, B=1, C/D=0

Jeff Turner directed and wrote this post. Please note the recent news from the club site. Especially interesting to Gambito players is the site registration process to get email notifications for these blog updates and other events.

IM Dionisio Aldama recovered from a Round 1 loss to Varun Krishnan and won his last three games including a close one against IM Cyrus Lakdawala (who finished in 2nd Place). Varun’s victory over IM Dionisio and draw with IM Cyrus helped him lock in the U2400 prize. Ajay Krishnan (Varun’s little brother, +42 rating points) continues to tap these prize funds. In this event he defeated Daniel Zhu (another tough youngster), and Expert Venkat Iyer, while drawing with Chuck Ensey.

Jason Arbeiter (+23 rating points) demonstrated he is no longer a “B” player. He won “A” money partially by upsetting (possibly rusty) Expert Raoul Crisologo (good to see him back in the ring, by the way). Chuck Ensey was undefeated going into round four and then ran into Lenny Sussman. Chuck had the largest rating pickup of the day with 52. Welcome back to Daniel Cook. Both he and Gurveer Singh (who picked up 39 rating points) had strong performances. Also, there were good performances by David Narevsky (+25 rating points), Stepehn Zhu, and Fred Cleveland.

And thanks to Paul Agron for playing a house game to even out the pack in Round 2.

Also, thanks to everyone for playing in our soggy club. Usually there are just one or maybe two weeks a year where we are sweeping the water out of the tournament hall. Hopefully things will be drier next week. It's really great to see so many kids playing great chess against the adults. Please note rating point changes are estimates

Here were the prize winners:

First Place: Dionisio Aldama  (6), $100
Second Place: Cyrus Lakdawala (5 1/2), $60
BU2400: Varun Krishnan (5 1/2), $75
BU2200: Lenny Sussman (4 1/2), $50

Gambito Open #596

Gambito Open #596 on 1/19/13

30 players, good turnout, here they are in pre-event rating order:
4 Masters: Dionisio Aldama, Cyrus Lakdawala, Kyron Griffith and Bruce Baker
8 Experts: Venkat Iyer, Aaron Wooten, Peter Hodges, Leonard Sussman, Chris Wonnell, Bud Stamper, Jeff Turner and Elkaei Rivera
6 Class A: Buddy Morris, Aaron Householder, Sridhar Ramanujam, Pejman Sagart, Ajay Krishnan and Jerry Qu
8 Class B: Gregory Ingolia, Sam Barboo, Chuck Ensey, Fawsi Murra, Gurveer Singh, Scott Householder, Ben Keltner and Anthony Harbone. Also: John Donahoo, 2 house games.
1 Class C: Keric Rivas
3 Class D/E: Joshua Chung, Patrick Edwards and Jim Harrell

We used a 4 point McMahon pairing system, where M=4, Exp=3, A=2, B=1, C/D=0
Chuck Ensey directed and wrote this post. Cyrus had it won after 3 rounds by defeating Kyron, Bruce and Venkat while Dionisio lost to both Kyron and Bruce. Cy drew with Dionisio in the last round but by then he already had a 1 1/2 point lead. Great day for Expert Jeff Turner, he drew with Peter Hodges, beat Chris Wonnell, drew with Bud Stamper and beat Venkat. Ajay continues to move up the rating charts and Greg Ingolia busted through to become an A player. He had an old scholastic rating that took some time to bring up. There should be a way for the rating system to take that into account, but as far as I know, they don't. Keric Rivas also had a good day with 2 wins, a draw and a loss only to Scott Householder. Joshua won the U1400 even though he had to leave early.

Here were the prize winners:
First Place: Cyrus Lakdawala (7 1/2), $100
Second Place: Kyron Griffith (6 1/2), $75
BU2400: Bruce Baker (6 1/2), $75
BU2200: Jeff Turner (6), $75
BU2000: Ajay Krishnan (4 1/2), $75
BU1800: Gregory Ingolia (4), $75
BU1600: Keric Rivas (2 1/2), $40
BU1400: Joshua Chung (1 1/2), $25

Total Prizes: $540

If you don't hear back from me on the email (likely after 4 PM), then please call the club. We must hear from you by 6:30 PM on Wednesday, after that the pairings go up at the club and it is too late to get a half point bye. You can still call and please do if you can't make it, but it would be a zero point bye. If you are running late, please let us know as we try to re-pair those players with no show opponents. Gambito #595

Gambito #595  1/12/13

24 players today, here they are (alphabetically)

Masters: Bruce Baker, Ronald Bruno, Kyron Griffith
Experts: Venkat Iyer, Tim McGuiness, Elkaei Rivera, Bud Stamper, Leonard Sussman, Aaron Wooten
Class A: Buddy Morris, Pejman Sagart
Class B: Sam Barboo, Eliza Eggert, Anthony Harbone, Andrew Negus, Gurveer Singh
Class C: Fred Cleveland, Thomas Diem, Claire Negus, David Palmer
Class D: Patrick Edwards, Mark Negus, Andrew Sung, Elias Uskokovic,

We used a 2 point McMahon pairing system where M/Exp=2, A or B=1 and C/D=0.

One of the nice points of the MacMahon is it lets you play mostly against your peers and as a consequence more players can go 3-1 or even 4-0, that wouldn't happen in a regular Swiss, you would get paired up too much.

Kyron ran away with this one defeating #2, #3, #4 and #5.

Notable rating pickups (Nice work. By the way, these are unofficial):
Elias Uskokovic +75
Claire Negus +72
Kyron Griffith +29

Thanks to house players John Donahoo and Steve Perry.

Here were the prize winners:

First Place: Kyron Griffith (6), $100
BU2400: Ronald Bruno (5), $60
Second Place/BU2200: Bruce Baker, Venkat Iyer, Elkaei Rivera, Bud Stamper, Lenny Sussman (4), $22
BU1800: Sam Barboo, Gurveer Singh (3), $25 Each
BU1600: Claire Negus (3), $50
Total Prizes: $430

Markowski Open Rd 1 of 7

Alina Markowski Qualifier, Round 1 of 7 on 1/02/13  7 PM

This event qualifies 13 players for the Club Championship. David Hart and John Funderburg are already in as current Co-Champions along with Raoul Crisologo (Shootout winner). Kyron Griffith also had a spot reserved as winner of the year-end "Masters" Class Championship, but he has given it up to play in the Markowski Open. Rated 2400, he probably doesn't have too much to worry about. All the players are in one big section, so the first few rounds have quite large rating mismatches. Still, each year we have one or two upsets in the first round, and this year we had even more...

If you want to join this event please email Chuck Ensey at chucnglo@aol.com by 4 PM on Wednesday, or call the club at 619-239-7166. Two half point byes are allowed, so you start with 1/2 a point.

60 players for round 1, but we expect 10 to 20 more to join for round 2, so no point in posting tentative pairings just yet. Here are 5 more players who are joining in round 2:
Aaron Wooten, Alfredo Deleon, Jim Humphrey, Roger Pedersen and Darryl Woodson...

Please join now, and/or get a friend to join too, so we can get to our normal 80 players for this popular event and maybe even get over 90!
