Inland Empire vs San Diego

Club Match: Inland Empire Chess Club vs San Diego Chess Club

This event was held on 12/16/12 at the SDCC. We tried to pair the players as fairly as possible with people playing others close to their rating, but it was not always possible with so many players and a few last minute adjustments. San Diego won in a squeeker 8 1/2-7 1/2, but everyone had a great time and we thank the Inland Empire club for making the long journey to visit our club. We promise to do it again sometime, with us visiting their club...

The time control was 40/90, SD/30, d/5....7

Board 1  Roel Yumol (2281) IECC - Bruce Baker (2300) SDCC  0-1
Bd 2 Nikolay Arutyunov (2193) SDCC - Hugo Villanueva (2272)  1-0
Bd 3  David Pensenen (2126) IECC - Leonard Sussman (2080) SDCC  1-0
Bd 4  Alejandrino Baluran (2052) SDCC - Hermognes Ramirez (2092) IECC  1/2-1/2
Bd 5  Jesse Victoria (2068) IECC - Tim McGuiness (2040) SDCC  1-0
Bd 6  Bud Stamper (2037) SDCC - Romeo Reario (1999)  1/2-1/2
It was all tied up on the top six boards!! 2 wins for SDCC, 2 for IECC and 2 draws

Bd 7  Annie Wang (1963) IECC - Aaron Householder (1916) SDCC  1-0
Bd 8  Chuck Ensey (1841) SDCC - Shyam Gandhi (1841) IECC  0-1
Bd 9  Kele Perkins (1781) IECC - Bruce Charnov (1820) SCCC  0-1
Bd 10  William Wijaya (1769) SDCC - Christopher Barnett (1752)  0-1
Bd 11  Joaquin Perkins (1730) IECC - Gary Weeks (1753) SDCC  0-1
Bd 12  Steve Perry (1704) SDCC - Ryan Chen (1614) IECC 0-1
On the next 6 boards IECC pulls ahead with 4 wins to 2

Bd 13  Malik Coleman (1556) IECC - Scott Householder (1627) SDCC  1/2-1/2
Bd 14  Thomas Diem (1547) SDCC - Andrew Mendez (1266) IECC  1-0
Bd 15  Marcos Gonzalez (970) IECC - Glenn Rich (1537) SDCC 0-1
Bd 16  Rachel Hong (1543) SDCC - Charles Clark (1530) IECC  1-0
With 3 wins and one draw on the bottom 4 boards SDCC pulls ahead by 1 point!!
It was a very close match ...

There was also a scholastic section where they played 4 games at G/30, SDCC also won that match by a close margin...

Gambito #592 12/22/12

Gambito #592  12/22/12

24 players today, here they are in pre-event rating order:

2 Masters: Cyrus Lakdawala and Bruce Baker
4 Experts: Leonard Sussman, Daniel Grazaian, Jeff Turner and Elkaei Rivera
6 Class A: Buddy Morris, Sridhar Ramanujam, Edgar Lopez, Zechariah Zhu, Chuck Ensey and Jerry Qu
5 Class B: Daniel Zhu, Jason Arbeiter, Eliza Eggert, Gary Weeks and Gurveer Singh
4 Class C: Jesse Wang, Alex Costello, Stephen Zhu and Fred Cleveland
3 Class D: Ganesh Dekate, Matthew Wang and Andrew Sung

We used our usual 3 point McMahon pairing system where M/Exp=3, A=2, B=1 and C/D=0
Cyrus pointed out it was the first time in quite a while he has gone 4-0. His rating finally got back over 2500. He beat the #2, #4, #5 and #6 rated players (Baker, Grazian, Turner and Rivera, but not in that order)... But he wasn't the only one to go 4-0. Daniel Zhu also accomplished the feat, beating the #7, #8, #11 and #12 rated players (Morris, Ramanujam, Ensey and Qu). His rating was boosted by 88 points, putting him well over 1800 (1886 approx) for the first time. Gurveer Singh lost only to Eliza and Alex Costello lost only to Jason Arbeiter. One of the nice points of the MacMahon is it lets you play mostly against your peers and as a consequence more players can go 3-1 or even 4-0, that wouldn't happen in a regular Swiss, you would get paired up too much.

Here were the prize winners:

First Place: Cyrus Lakdawala (7), $100
Second Place: Bruce Baker (5 1/2), $60
BU2400: Elkaei Rivera (5), $50
BU2200/BU2000: Edgar Lopez (5) and Daniel Zhu (5), $60 each
BU1800: Gurveer Singh (4), $50
BU1600: Alex Costello (3), $50
Total Prizes: $430

Please note there IS a Gambito next week, as Jeff Turner has offered to direct while Bruce and Chuck are in Las Vegas. Thanks Jeff!
