The Alina Markowski Open Rd 1

Club Championship Qualifier! 1/04/12  7 PM

Happy New Year! It is time to start the Club Championship cycle once again. That means the most popular tournament of the year is about to start...don't miss out! It is 7 rounds with only a $25 entry fee. Open to all players, and all will compete in 1 huge section so this is your chance to possibly play a Master even if you are an average Class B player. For the first few rounds you will be paired either way up or way down, but either way you can learn something new. Often there is at least one upset in the first round, or at least a few draws. Now is your chance to shine!

Two byes are allowed, but last round byes must be requested before Round 2 and are irrevocable.

Time Control is our standard 40/90, SD/60, d/5.

Registration is from 5:30 to 6:45, or pre-register online by emailing Chuck at chucnglo@aol.com or by calling 619-239-7166.

The 12 players with the highest score at the end of 7 rounds will qualify to join the Club Championship with Raoul Crisologo, Bruce Baker, John Funderburg and Jim Humphrey. Usually it takes 5 points to get into this select group and often there are a few fives with the worst tie breaks that don't make it in. (here's a tip - taking byes hurts your tie breaks, so try to avoid them if possible). Also the top 16 qualifiers under 1800 will play in the Reserve Championship.

Cash Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each rating class and maybe even 4th or 5th place, depending on the number of players. Often we have 90 or more! Here we go!

****************************************************************************************************

71 players so far, plus 2 house players. Here are the results from round 1. As predicted, there were a few upsets and a draw. Tom Kuhn drew with Expert Jim Humphrey, who decided to give up his place in the Club Championship and play in the Markowski . The two upsets were Anthony Harbone over Expert Robert Defore and Daniel Zhu over Class A William Wijaya. The rating differentials were about 500 points for most of the games.

$20 Entry Fee, 4 rounds G/40 d/5, Rounds at 10:30 AM, 12:15, 2:45 and 4:30 PM

Pretty good turnout of 30 players, a drop from the Super Gambito's 42 players, but still quite nice. I was pleasantly surprised. We had a few visitors to go along with the usual suspects.

Here are the players in rating order:

3 Masters: Cyrus Lakdawala, Bruce Baker and Peter Graves.

8 Experts: Craig Clawitter, Raoul Crisologo, Paul Agron, Aaron Wooten, Jamieson Pryor, Leonard Sussman, Ben Barquin and Elkaei Rivera (playing up).

6 Class A: Pejman Sagart, William Wijaya, Ernesto Alvarez, Jason Arbeiter, Matt Souza and Edgar Lopez.

8 Class B: Boris Polonsky, Hector Gonzalez, Chuck Ensey, Jay Choi, Tom Kuhn, Blake Borskey, Aaron Moman and Anthony Harbone.

2 Class C: Richard Gams and Eusy Ancheta.

3 Class D/E: Fred Cleveland, Patrick Edwards and Mark Negus

We used a 3 point McMahon pairing system where M/E=3, A=2, B=1 and C/D=0.  We also had a few house players: Bud Stamper (1 game), David Whitten (1 game) and Andrew Negus (2 games).

Cyrus won all four games as he is wont to do after a slightly sub-par performance last week. Jamieson Pryor upset Bruce Baker in round 1 and Bruce then bowed out as he usually does after a first round loss. Graves lost to Cy, beat Barquin, drew with Rivera and beat Clawitter. Jamieson lost to Cy, but then beat Agron and drew with Wooten. Aaron Wooten had taken a bye and then drew with Crisologo and beat Sussman before his last round draw with Jamieson.

This event is now rated, and there were some pretty big rating gains: +73 for Jay Choi to 1784, +55 for William Wijaya to 1917, +49 for Matt Souza to 1864, +33 for Elkaei Rivera to 1978 and +33 for Jamieson Pryor to 2095.

December Super Gambito

Gambito #543  December Super Gambito   12/03/11

$700 Guaranteed Prize Fund, which was increased to $965 due to big turnout.

$25 Entry Fee, 4 rounds G/40 d/5, Rounds at 10:30 AM, 12:15, 2:45 and 4:30 PM

Great turnout of 42 players, split into 3 sections. 7 Masters and if Kyron Griffith, Varun Krishnan and Ali Morshedi had happened to be here we would have had 10! Frequent Gambito Champion and book author IM Cyrus Lakdawala drew with fellow IM Dionisio Aldama in round two and it was no GM draw, but a hard fought battle. Cyrus had the edge most of the game and was way ahead on time, but the crafty Dionisio found a simple way to draw by steering the game to a Bishops of opposite color endgame. Cyrus then drew the next round with surging NM Jeff Arnold (rated 2451), while Dionisio grabbed wins from Ken Arnold and then Jeff Arnold. Ron Bruno lost to Cy in round 1 but then reeled off 3 wins from Ben Barquin, Leonard Sussman and Craig Clawitter. Paul Agron upset Ken Arnold in the last round to claim BU2200.

In the Reserve Section Elkaei Rivera has been winning lots of U2000 prizes over the last few months, but this time he drew with new Gambito player Bud Stamper in round 1 and lost to William Wijaya in round 2. The "other" Bud (and where was Bud Morris today??) went on to win 3 in a row. Canadian Boris Polonsky, who will be here for a few months (he says he loves our club! "One of the best anywhere") started of with 3 wins to clinch BU1800, losing only in round 4 to Bud Stamper. Stamper The Stomper!! New player Chris Calvin also did well, winning 2nd U2000, he wasn't sure of his playing strength just a few weeks ago, being unrated, but now we can say he is definitely Class A caliber! Rolando Ignacio scored 2 1/2 for 2nd U1800. It was fun to have the A's and B's playing together as usually they don't play in the two section format where the A's are in the Open and the B's in the Reserve.

In the Booster Section, Aaron Moman scored a perfect 4-0, but he was fortunate in the last round when playing the #1 seed Andrew Negus. They played a pretty equal game for over 40 moves, but then Andrew suddenly surged ahead after a few mistakes by Aaron. They were probably both in time trouble at this point, and then in one of those tricky King and pawn endgames, Andrew made a misstep with a bad King move and allowed Aaron to go from -8 on Fritz to +8 with one mistake. Ouch, I've been there done that, Andrew, just learn from it and move on, but keep it in your memory banks.

Here are the players in rating order:

7 Masters: Cyrus Lakdawala, Dionisio Aldama, Jeff Arnold, Bruce Baker, Ken Arnold, Ron Bruno, Peter Graves.

8 Experts: Craig Clawitter, Hin Tsang, Raoul Crisologo, Paul Agron, Aaron Wooten, Leonard Sussman, Ben Barquin and Jamieson Pryor.

6 Class A: Francisco Hirata, Elkaei Rivera, Pejman Sagart, William Wijaya, Chris Calvin, Sheila Rodriguez.

9 Class B: Boris Polonsky, Rolando Ignacio, Bud Stamper, Jerry Qu, Chuck Ensey, Jay Choi, Zechariah Zhu, Anthony Harbone, Tim Loperfido (unr).

5 Class C: Andrew Negus, Aaron Moman, Daniel Zhu, Octavio Rodriguez, David Narevsky.
