Anthony Harbone Precision Shootout Rd 2

Anthony Harbone Precision Shootout

Round 2 of 6 Wednesday 8/31/11 7 PM

We honor one of our friendliest and most experienced club members, Anthony Harbone. One thing I have noticed about his game is that he loves to sacrifice material for the initiative and he hates to trade Queens. He's a real fighter and has given me many tough contests over the years. Please congratulate "Tony" when you see him and let him know how much the club admires him.

This tournament will be in 4 sections, 2 Fast and 2 Slow. Instead of Swiss pairings, we will use SDCC custom made Precision Pairings. In this system, you are paired, if possible, with a player who has the same number of points as you, but instead of the top half versus bottom half pairings as used in the Swiss system, you are paired with the person who is closest to you in rating. We tried this for the first time last year and it worked pretty well.

August Gambito Opens: #528, #529, #530

Gambito Open #530  8/27/11

30 players, pretty good turnout and a strong Open Section with 7 Masters. Here they are in pre-event rating order:

7 Masters: Cyrus Lakdawala, Bruce Baker, Kyron Griffith, Ali Morshedi, Peter Graves, Martin Nilsson and Varun Krishnan.

7 Experts: Peter Hodges, Leonard Sussman, Raoul Crisologo, Alan Tsoi, Jamieson Pryor, Buddy Morris and Ben Barquin.

6 Class A: Venkat Iyer, Chris Wonnell, Kenneth Xu, William Wijaya, Elkaei Rivera and Chuck Ensey.

4 Class B: Edgar Lopez, Jerry Qu, Tom Kuhn and Anthony Harbone.

6 Class C/D: Jay Choi, Ajay Krishnan, Fred Cleveland, Michael Blandin, Stanford Talcott and Bahman Rafii (unr).

Here were the prize winners:

First Place: Cyrus Lakdawala (4), $100

Second Place/U2400: Kyron Griffith (3), Peter Graves (3) and Bruce Baker (3), $50 each

BU2200: Peter Hodges (2 1/2) and  Leonard Sussman (2 1/2), $37 each

BU2000: Elkaei Rivera (2) and Venkat Iyer (2), $37 each

First/Second Place Reserve Section (U1800): Jerry Qu (3 1/2) and Tom Kuhn (3 1/2), $37 each

BU1600: Ajay Krishnan (2 1/2), $70 each

Total Prizes: $540

Gambito Open #529  8/29/11

Another great turnout of 32 players! Here are players in pre-event rating order. We used a 4 point McMahon with M=4, E=3, A=2, B=1, C/D=0

4 Masters: Cyrus Lakdawala, Bruce Baker, Kyron Griffith and Nikolay Arutyunov.

9 Experts: Peter Hodges, Leonard Sussman, Alan Tsoi, Jamieson Pryor, Ben Barquin, Buddy Morris, Jim Humphrey, Aaron Wooten and Venkat Iyer.

7 Class A: Amor Luat, Chris Wonnell, Kenneth Xu, Jason Ma, Reyes Lopez, Pejman Sagart and Chuck Ensey.

6 Class B: Jerry Qu, Aaron Householder, Scott Householder, Edgar Lopez, Tom Kuhn and Anthony Harbone.

6 Class C/D: Zechariah Zhu, Jesse Wang, Fred Cleveland, Daniel Zhu, Alex Householder and Matthew Wang.

Cyrus defeated Kyron, Bruce, Nikolay and Alan Tsoi. Newly minted master Nikolay drew with Bruce, beat near-master Peter Hodges and Kyron. If Peter has managed to beat Leonard Sussman in the last round, a master rating was waiting in the wings, but it was not to be, at least today. Lenny took his normal bye, drew with Alan Tsoi, beat solid Expert Buddy Morris and then the cheerful but disappointed Peter Hodges. Reyes Lopez, who we haven't seen for a while, won 3 in row but lost to Jamieson in the last round, but still that was good enough to take BU2000. We also haven't seen Amor Luat in ages, but he made a surprise appearance; he is also talking about playing in the So Cal Open. I was disappointed we didn't get any more sign-ups for that event today, but they are still coming in online, up to over 80 players now. I lost a spectacular game to Anthony Harbone, who I had just mentioned in another blog how he is a great attacking player and he proved it today. Edgar Lopez is back from his travels and administered a beat down to the Class B players (including me) after losing round 1 to Aaron Householder. The Zhu brothers continue their climb up the rating charts and the prize money list. I barely beat Zack in the last round, breaking a streak of 7 losses in a row for me at the Gambito. Ouch!

Here are the Prize winners:

First Place: Cyrus Lakdawala (8), $100  Second Place: Nikolay Arutyunov (6 1/2), $75

BU2400: Kyron Griffith (6), $75   BU2200: Leonard Sussman (6), $75

2nd U2200: Jamieson Pryor (5 1/2) and Jim Humphrey (5 1/2), $10 each

U2000: Reyes Lopez (5), $75  U1800: Edgar Lopez (4), $75

BU1600/1400 tie: Fred Cleveland (2), Daniel Zhu (2), Zechariah Zhu (2) and Jesse Wang (2), $21 each

Total Prizes: $580
