Please Note: comments below are made by Chuck Ensey and are intended for entertainment purposes only. I take full responsibility and these comments do not reflect the official views of the SDCC, this website or anyone else. Rick Aeria and I used to write long and lovingly about the Club Championship and we used to try to inject humor and funny photos, captions and cartoons, etc. for every round. We really don't have time to do that anymore (Rick is now in Guam), since the recession has hit our wallets and we all have to work much harder just to try to stay even. Maybe when I retire I can get back to full coverage, but I fear that day is still a long way off. Anyway, if anyone is offended by my lame jokes then I am sorry, we are just trying to liven it up a bit... (Note: comments deleted due to change in pairings)

Here are the Results for round 4:

Club Championship (16 players):

Board 1  John Funderburg (3) - Bruce Baker (2)  1-0

Bd 4  Paul Agron (1 1/2) - Fausto Robles (1 1/2)  1-0

Bd 5 Ron Soto (1 1/2) - Carl Wagner (1)  1/2-1/2

Bd 6  Mariano Lozano (1) - Eric Kuniholm (1)  1-0

Bd 7  Fawsi Murra Jr (0) - Alejandrino Baluran (1/2)

Next week: Super Gambito on 4/03

Gambito #460  3/13/10

Only 6 players today due to the St. Patrick's Day Parade and lack of parking. This really only happens a few times a year, but it is very annoying when it does and you have to seach for 1/2 an hour or more for any parking at all, even spots very far away were hard to find. I parked on Ivy and Columbia, which is just on the other side of Hwy 5!  Obviously most players just decided to stay away, but a few brave souls managed to somehow make to the club. A few other house players showed up after round 2. Players: Nikolay Arutyunov (1961), Roberto Aiello (1937), Chris Wonnell (1920), Matt Souza (1851), Chuck Ensey (1737) and Jim Krooskos (1468). House players: Christopher Kuttruff (1578), Phillip Skiba (1741), Guru Golapalakrishnan (unr) and Frank Gaylord (unr).

Prize winners: 1st Place: Chris Wonnell (4), $50

2nd Place: Matt Souza (3), $30   3rd Place: Roberto Aiello (2), $10

U1800: Jim Krooskos (1), $20

Total Prizes: $110

Gambito #459  3/06/10  March Super Gambito

34 players today, great turnout and that was with quite a few of our most frequent players missing, most notably Bruce Baker and Leonard Sussman. Bruce just needed a day off and Lenny is ok too, but he is still recovering from a fall and so he took a pass this week. Some others we missed today were Agron, Arutyunov, Bruno, Graves, Reyes Lopez, Milton, Mitchell and Orlowski. This isn't unusual; out of our 33 frequent players, there are always 10 or so who don't play any one particular week. However this is the first one Leonard Sussman has missed in a long time, we wish him a speedy recovery.

Also we would like to welcome some new players: Charles Gelinas, an Expert from Hemet, Tristan Pollner, a scholastic player giving the Gambito his first try, and also Jacobo Cortes, a brand new 11 year old player from Ensenada. Jacobo did quite well with 2 wins, earning an estimated provisional rating of around 1400. We normally don't have an U1400 prize at the Super Gambito, but we had so many players rated U1400 today, that I threw in an extra U1400 prize which was won by Andrew Negus with 2 1/2 points. The young man is getting stronger week by week it seems. He gained an estimated 112 points to 1317 and seems headed for over 1400 in short order.

Open Section (18 players):

5 Masters: Cyrus Lakdawala (2553), Jeff Arnold (2341), Ali Morshedi (2316), Ken Arnold (2296), Kyron Griffith (2208)

5 Experts: Eric Kuniholm (2146), Raoul Crisologo (2124), Alan Tsoi (2103), Varun Krishnan (2078), Charles Gelinas (2007)

Reserve Section (16 players):

4 Class B: Jason Arbeiter (1788), Chuck Ensey (1739), Sean McNeely (1694), Anthony Harbone (1600)

Next week is St. Patrick's Day Parade, so be aware that parking will be quite difficult. If you are going to play in Gambito #460 on March 13th, you will have to arrive early and hunt for parking several to many blocks away, or another idea is to have someone drop you off or take a bus. I am usually able to park 5 to 10 blocks away if I get there at 9 AM or so. Another option is the Western Class Championships, a big full weekend money event in LA, see the SCCF web site for details.

Friday Night Blitz Chess

Every Friday Night at  7 PM

Game in 7 minutes w/ 2 second delay, 7 rounds, $5 entry fee.

We are holding this every Friday in the Skittles room (so as not to disturb Bruce Baker's Jedi Knights Club). I (Chuck Ensey) will try to make it whenever I can, but I can't be there this week. Christopher Kuttruff will run the pairings this week, with assistance from Bruce when needed. I think this might be a good way to help grow the membership of the club as there might be a lot of players out there who are not ready for tournament chess, or who may be be intimidated by the prospect, but they might be more willing to give this a try. We will see... if the format will grow over time or not. I think it might catch on, at least the players so far are very enthusiastic!

Last week on 3/12 we had a good turnout and it looks like we can expect somewhere between 10 and 20 players each week.
