January Gambito Opens, #499 - 503

Gambito Open #502  1/22/11

Good day, 23 players. We used a McMahon pairing sytem where M=3, Exp=2, A/B=1, C/D=0. Here are the players:

5 Masters: Lakdawala, Morshedi, Baker, Griffith and Krishnan

6 Experts: Tsang, Aeria, Hodges, Orlowski, Sussman and Pryor

2 Class A: Wonnell and Ensey;  3 Class B: Ren, Kuhn, Harbone

3 Class C: Qu, Sanchez, Cleveland; 4 Class D: J. Wang, Blandin, M. Wang, Fellman

Strong field with 5 Masters and 6 Experts. It was good to see Ali Morshedi back at the club. he was on his way to a 4th round money-winning victory against Rick Aeria when a strange thing happened. I was watching the game and could see that Ali's threat was an open rook file against Rick's King and sure enough Ali made some deflecting threats, but ended up doubling his Rooks on the h-file which clearly lead to mate or at least loss of Queen or more. The only problem was that he had only a few seconds left on the clock and even with time delay this can be tricky. Sure enough, somehow Rick dodged a bullet as Ali seemed to take the wrong piece in the time scramble and actually ended up a Rook down! Neither player seemed exactly sure how it all happened as neither was recording the score, but both players knew that the result was a lucky one for Rick. When you run out all your time you take that risk.

Another interesting game was Cyrus' defeat of Bruce in Round 1. Bruce seemed to be holding his own with a Rook and 2 Knights against a Queen and Knight with lots of pawns on both sides. As Bruce started to run out of time he began to falter a bit, and he had to give up his Rook for a Knight. This left it with a Queen versus 2 Knights and some pawns. Bruce skillfully traded off the last of the pawns and then it was just the lone Queen versus the two lonely Knights. With only seconds left Bruce dropped one of the Knights and it was over. Afterwards, no one seemed to be sure if this was a theoretical win or a draw, but there were lots of opinions. According to my database, it should have been a draw.

Prize Winners:

First Place: Cyrus Lakdawala (7), $100

Second Place/U2400 tie: Kyron Griffith (5) and Rick Aeria (5), $55 each

BU2200: Hin Tsang (4 1/2) and Leonard Sussman (4 1/2), $25 each

BU1800: Tom Kuhn (3), $50

Gambito Open #500  1/08/11

This tournament will mark a big milestone for the Gambito Open, which started in late 2000. Ten years later we are still going strong, with some of the same players still competing, plus lots of new ones. Bruce Baker is the founder of the Gambito Open and much of its success can be attributed to his steady hand. The event is named for Ron Gambito, a popular player and a great chess enthusiast back in those times. Ron was a good friend to Bruce and to the club, but passed away way too young, shortly after we named the event for him. His kind and gentle spirit are sorely missed and we like to think that he would be proud of what we have done with his tournament.

4 rounds of G/40 with 5 second delay. Entry fee is $25A McMahon pairing system was used where M=5, E=4, A=3, B=2, C=1, D=0. If you win money we do make you join the SCCF [$18 a year, $10 for juniors (18 years old or less)], and if you win over $100 during the year or previous year, you do need to join the San Diego Chess Club ($60 a year, $30 for juniors, $48 for seniors or active military).

Bruce Baker Class Championships

The Bruce Baker Class Championships    Round 1 of 6    11/17/10  7 PM

This month we honor our club manager Bruce Baker. I will say more about him later, but for now let me just point out that he is one of the best human beings I have ever known: honest, kind and trustworthy are a few of the adjectives that come to mind. His years of service to our club and to the royal game should never be taken lightly. Please wish him well when you next see him.

This event is in 5 sections: Master/Expert, Class A, B, C and D. The time control is 40/90, SD/60 with 5 second delay. There will be very nice trophies for the winners in each Class. Plus the winner of "The Masters", the highest section, will get a berth into the 2011 Club Championship without any other qualifications needed. Peter Hodges, Bruce Baker and John Funderburg are already seeded in, so if one of them wins the Masters, then whoever places second would get the berth. Tiebreaks will be used if needed.

Entry Fee is $25 as always, and also 2 byes are allowed. Please sign up in advance by emailing chucnglo@aol.com or by calling the club at 619-239-7166. November Gambito Opens #492-495

Gambito #495  11/27/10

4 rounds of G/40 with 5 second delay. Entry Fee: $20. Must be USCF member ($42), but we can sign you up up on the spot (cash preferred but checks accepted, sorry no credit cards). No other memberships required (although eventually we will get you to join our club!) Almost all entry fees are paid back out in prizes, minus the rating fee. Usually we have 20 or more players so the prize fund ranges from $400 to $800, depending on the number of players. The more players, the bigger the prize fund!

Prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd, BU2400, BU2200, BU2000, BU1800, BU1600 and sometimes even BU1400 if we have enough Class D players  participating. Players range in rating from 2550 to 1000 or less, so don't be afraid to try it; we try to pair players of similar strengths so everyone has fun. It's a great way to learn and improve your chess by rubbing shoulders with the likes of IM Cyrus Lakdawala and NM Bruce Baker, both of whom share their vast knowledge of the game freely in friendly post-mortems after they crush the Class A players like me. There are also many young kids who play, some of them are only around 1000 rating, but others have worked their way higher by playing in this event, for instance 16 year old Kyron Griffith even became a Master after lots of hard work. So give it try!

Registration is from 10 AM to 10:25, the rounds are at 10:30, 12:15, 2:45 and 4:30. You can take a bye (a free 1/2 point) if you don't want to play the first round, just show up around noon to register or call the club at 619-239-7166 and tell us you are on the way. Any questions? email Chuck Ensey at chucnglo@aol.com

Gambito #494  11/20/10

30 players today, a really great turnout. Sometimes the rain brings out players who might otherwise being doing something else. I don't know, maybe that had nothing to do with it, it is hard to tell what motivates people. At any rate I was just thrilled to see so many great friends. We were able to use a full McMahon with M/E=4, A=3, B=2, C=1, D=0. If we had had a few more masters we could have a 5 point McMahon, but we only had 2. Bruce took the day off... Hin Tsang and Chris Wonnell came by just to watch today and did not play...

Here were the players, in rating order:

Masters (2): Lakdawala and Griffith

Experts (7): V. Krishnan, Arutyunov, Milton, Agron, Sussman, Damasco, Wooten

Class A (6): Vinoya, Pryor, Wijaya, Morris, Quiba, Ensey

Class B (4): Arbeiter, Blank, Kuhn, Harbone

Class C (4): Choi, Siddiqi, Whitten, Cleveland

Class D (7): A. Negus, Edwards, C. Negus, A. Krishnan, Press, Stanard, Rich

Irina Nizmutdinova and Mark Negus also filled in for 2 house games each. There were quite a few notable upsets today: Glenn Rich over Ajay Krishnan (491 point differential), Claire Negus over Anthony Harbone (335 points), Ron Stanard over Pat Edwards (329 points), Tom Kuhn over William Wijaya (272 points), Aaron Wooten over Kyron Griffith (246 points), Dan Press over Andrew Negus (241 points) and Haziq Siddiqi over Alexander Blank (236 points). Other minor upsets were Quiba over Vinoya, Pryor over Agron and Ensey over Morris.

Usually we only have 2nd place prizes at a Super Gambito, not at regular Gambito Opens, but we threw them today in because there were so many players - I wanted to reward them with lots of prizes for coming out...

Here is an interesting game, sort of a "bad beat", as in a surprising river card winner in poker. You can never relax in chess and I made that mistake against the resourceful Joel Quiba

Joselito Quiba (1861) - Chuck Ensey (1842) Gambito #494, Round 3

1.e4 Nf6 2.f3 e5 3.c3 Nxe4!? 4.fxe4 Qh4+ 5.Ke2 Qxe4+ 6.Kf2 Bc5+ 7.d4 exd4 8.Bb5? (much better was 8.Bd3 dxc3+ 9.Kf1 cxb2 10.Bxb2) dxc3+ 9.Kf1 Bxg1? (a cheapo that works, but much better was 9...c2!) 10.Rxg1? (10.Nc3 Qe5 11.Kxg1) Qf5+ 11.Ke1 Qxb5 (regaining the piece and 3 pawns to the good) 12.Nxc3 Qe5+ 13.Kf2 0-0 14.Nd5?! Qf5+? (c6! if 15.Bf4 Qxd5) 15.Qf3 Qxf3+?? ("an unfortunate move that relinquishes the win" says Fritz. I foolishly thought, hey, I am up 3 pawns, why not trade queens, Better was 15...Qc2+ 16.Kg3 Nc6) 16.gxf3 (that's why not, now White has a strong attack on Black's King, plus the threat of Nxc7) Na6? (this is not the answer, but I am going to lose anyway) 17.Bh6 Re8? (or g6 18.Nf6+ Kh8 19.Bxf8) 18.Rxg7+ Kh8 19.Nf6 Re6 20.Rxh7# 1-0 A mistake filled game, but at least it was entertaining. How NOT to play chess perhaps!

Here were the prize winners:

Unrated players can only win book prizes, but you will get a rating once you play one event. No other memberships are required. Cash prizes are based on the number of entrants and almost all the entry fees are returned in prizes, minus a small fee for the club, $30 to $50 depending on the number of players. Usually we have well over 20 players, so that means $400 and up in prizes.

But it is not about the money, it's about the fun of playing chess. Chess is an art, a science and a competition all rolled into one glorious package. Each game YOU decide where the pieces move, so it's all about making the right decisions based on an ever changing landscape of material, force, position and time. You create your own style of play and learn technique as you go along from better players and from reading books and studying the games and history of chess. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat, it is all here in heart pounding brain teasers. And now with the advent of strong computer programs, you can study your game afterwards and find out where you went wrong in the myriad of possible moves you had to choose from. You learn more from losses than from wins, but oh those wins can be so exciting and satisfying...

And here we have the sentiments of a one Mr. Tom Petty:

It's good to be King, if just for a while. To be there in velvet, yeah, to give 'em a smile.

It's good to get high and never come down. It's good to be King of your own little town.

Yeah the world would swing if I were King. Can I help it if I still dream from time to time...

It's good to be King and have your own way. Get a feeling of peace at the end of the day

And when your bulldog barks and your canary sings, You're out there with winners

It's good to be King.  Yeah I'll be King when dogs get wings

Can I help it if I still dream from time to time...

It's good to be King and have your own world. It helps to make friends, it's good to meet girls.

A sweet little Queen who can't run away. It's good to be King, whatever it pays...

Excuse me if I have some place in my mind where I go from time to time...
