The Alina Markowski Open 1/06/10

Alina Markowski Open  - Round 1    1/06/10    7 PM

This 7 round event kicks off our club championship cycle. Already seeded in for the Club Championship are Raoul Crisologo,John Funderburg, Leonard Sussman and Felix Villarreal, but it is possible that like last year,, Felix may not be able to play, so the top 12 or possibly 13 players with the highest scores in this event will qualify for the 7 round Club Championship (starts on 2/24/10). Rounds 1 through 7 of the Markowski are every Wednesday night on 1/06, 1/13, 1/20, 1/27, 2/03, 2/10 and 2/17. This event also qualifies 16 players for the Reserve Championship, which is for players U1800. A Women's Championship will also start on 2/24.

Two byes are available if requested in time (before 6:30 PM the night of the round), but last round byes must be requested before the start of round 2. Entry Fee is $25, and everyone must renew their SDCC membership if they haven't already done so. Club Membership runs on a calendar year basis, so everyone expires on 12/31. Dues are $60 a year, $48 for seniors or for active mililtary, $30 for juniors. Family memberships are $120. There are generous cash prizes throughout the year, so you will have plenty of chances to win that money back and then plenty more.

The time control for this event is our standard 40/90, SD/60 with 5 second delay. To register for this event, please email or call the club telephone at 619-239-7166. In this event, we all play in one huge section, so the first few rounds will feature large rating differences. Despite this, there is almost always a few upsets, or at least a few draws in the first few rounds. It is your chance to upset a much higher rated player, and if not, at least to learn something from the experience and probably lose only 1 or 2 rating points, even if you lose, so there is practically nothing to lose and a lot to gain. Some people complain about the rating mismatches, but still it seems to be very popular because we usually have 90 players or so. If you don't want to play a much higher or lower rated player (you will either get paired way up or way down), then take a bye for the first round or even the first two rounds. Personally, I think it is fun and a good way to get to know the best players in the club.
