Class Championships Rd 4

2009 Class Championships Round 4 of 6

on 12/02/09  7:00 PM  30/60, SD/60, 5 sec delay

These are 4 hour games, all of them should be over by 11:15 PM and many games are done by 10:30. I have noticed that this allows extra time for players to go over their games and socialize more with other players. So far most players are adapting well to the new time control, although there is always a vocal minority who want either longer or shorter time controls. We can't please everyone, which is why we try to mix it up a bit, rather than always play the same time control as some players have suggested (so they can stay in their "rhythm"). Also it is good for players to learn how to set their clocks, an essential skill that many players overlook. One reason we prefer the black Excaliber clocks is that they are much easier to set than many of the other brands. We have them on sale at the club.

I would love to see some comments on the message board about your preferred time control. As a chessplayer, I think you have to be adaptable, just like on the chessboard where things are constantly changing and you have to adjust to the new conditions. Change is good and healthy for you, I don't want to get stuck in a rut. If you want really high quality chess with lots of time then why not play in the Southern California Open where there were 6 hour games? Some of these players asking for longer time controls were conspicuously absent from that event, so I don't have a lot of sympathy for their position.

Entry Fee: $25. Two byes allowed, except no byes allowed for the last round. Call the club phone at 619-239-7166 or just email TD Chuck Ensey at chucnglo@aol.com to request a bye. Please get email requests in by 4 PM on Wednesday and phone requests in by 6:30 PM.

Gambito #445 and #446

Gambito #446   11/28/09

Yes, there was a Gambito Open today, as always. The only day we ever miss is the Saturday after Christmas, but other than that we are here pretty much every Saturday of the year, unless we are hosting a weekend event here like the Senior/Junior Open (April 17-18th, 2010) or the San Diego County Championships (August 14 -15, 2010).

22 players today, pretty good considering we lost quite a few to the American Open in Los Angeles this weekend. We played in two sections of 11 players each. Here were the prize winners:

Open Section:

First Place: Cyrus Lakdawala (4), $100    Second Place: Nikolay Arutyunov (3), $50

BU2400: Raoul Crisologo (2 1/2), $50       BU2200: Lennart Mathe (2 1/2), $50

BU2000: Aaron Householder (2), $50

Reserve Section:

BU1800: Charlie Berkman (3 1/2) and Matt Souza (3 1/2), $25 each

BU1600: Scott Householder (3), $50

Total Prizes: $400

Next week is the December Super Gambito.

Gambito #445   11/21/09

24 players, good turnout. A heartfelt Welcome Back to long time Gambito player James "Mitch" Mitchell, he missed the last 200 Gambito Opens, but he's back! Mitch was one of the original players; his second rated event was Gambito #24 and he was very active in the first 200 Gambito Opens. It appears he studied a bit while he was away, he beat Charlie Berkman (1783) and Chris Wonnell (1906) plus he earned a draw with near Expert Jamieson Pryor (1968), while losing only to Eric Smith (1969). Very impressive for a player rated 1648, but now after this event he is 1730!

McMahon pairings with M/E=2, A/B=1, C/D=0

Here are the prize winners:

First Place: Cyrus Lakdawala (6), $100         BU2400: Bruce Baker (5), $60

BU2200: Leonard Sussman (4 1/2), $60       2nd Place: Carey Milton (4), $50

BU2000: Charlie Berkman (4), $60               BU1800: James Mitchell (3 1/2), $50

BU1600: Michael Ferguson (2 1/2), $50

Total Prizes: $430

2005: Joel Banawa            2006: Enrico Sevillano

2007: Enrico Sevillano      2008: Ron Bruno & Show Kitagami

2009: Raoul Crisologo

Last year was the first time there was a tie for First Place. With 8 rounds you would think that would be enough to get a clear first place, but not last year. But it was nice to get two new names to add to the list. Who will it be this year? A new name like Peter Graves? Avram Zaydenburg? Romeo Ignacio? Jorge Balares? John Funderburg? Eric Montany? Any of these could easily win. Or maybe one of the fast rising young players like Kyron Griffith, Alan Tsoi, Jesse Orlowski, Jason Qu or Varun Krishnan. Or maybe an "old" guy like Ed Baluran, Carey Milton, Raoul Crisologo or Leonard Sussman. We'll have to wait and see, but I am really looking forward to this one...

But it's not all about first place, there are plenty of prizes for every rating class. We view this event as the Gambito Open Championship for the year, so bragging rights come with winning first place in your rating class.

Class Championships Rd 1

2009 Class Championships Round 1 of 6

on 11/11/09  7:00 PM  30/60, SD/60, 5 sec delay

This popular annual event awards trophies to the winners and bragging rights for the whole year! This year since there has been such great interest in the shorter time control of G/90 versus our normal 40/90, SD/60, (in fact the last tournament had twice as many players in the G/90 section) we are trying out an intermediate time control of 30/60, SD/60. This is a 4 hour game, half way between the 3 hour G/90 and the 5 hour 40/90, SD/60.  So those players who like to get home early will be streched a little bit, but we should be done just after 11 PM instead of the very tough after midnight that the full time control permits. So I hope this compromise will work out, but we will see, it is just an experiment.

Entry Fee: $25, must be paid by round 2 or there is a $5 fine. Two byes allowed, last round bye (on 12/16/09) must be requested before the start of round 2.

November Super Gambito (#443)

November Super Gambito (#443)  11/07/09

36 players total, great turnout, especially in the Reserve Section. The Open Section was lacking many of our regular players, maybe they are resting up for next weeks's big Super Double Gambito. Today Madhavan Vajapeyam scored an upset against NM Bruce Baker in Round 2. Kyron Griffith scored an impressive Best Game Prize winner against Leonard Sussman in Round 3 and then took a quick draw with IM Cyrus Lakdawala in Round 4.

In the Reserve Section, Aaron Householder once again managed a perfect 4-0 score against the large field. In the last round he defeated fellow youngster Jason Ma, who had won 3 in row up to that point. Aaron's rating is now 1807, congratulations Aaron for making it to Class A at such a young age.

We were glad to see the Helix Charter School players back in action again and Ryan Valley, one of their more jolly and boisterous players, tied for BU1600 with 3 others, including new player Paul Woo, a young military man who hasn't played for a while but is anxious to get back into the swing of things in the chess world. Paul also won the Best Game Prize in this section.

Here are the prize winners:
