2009 Class Championships Round 4 of 6
on 12/02/09 7:00 PM 30/60, SD/60, 5 sec delay
These are 4 hour games, all of them should be over by 11:15 PM and many games are done by 10:30. I have noticed that this allows extra time for players to go over their games and socialize more with other players. So far most players are adapting well to the new time control, although there is always a vocal minority who want either longer or shorter time controls. We can't please everyone, which is why we try to mix it up a bit, rather than always play the same time control as some players have suggested (so they can stay in their "rhythm"). Also it is good for players to learn how to set their clocks, an essential skill that many players overlook. One reason we prefer the black Excaliber clocks is that they are much easier to set than many of the other brands. We have them on sale at the club.
I would love to see some comments on the message board about your preferred time control. As a chessplayer, I think you have to be adaptable, just like on the chessboard where things are constantly changing and you have to adjust to the new conditions. Change is good and healthy for you, I don't want to get stuck in a rut. If you want really high quality chess with lots of time then why not play in the Southern California Open where there were 6 hour games? Some of these players asking for longer time controls were conspicuously absent from that event, so I don't have a lot of sympathy for their position.
Entry Fee: $25. Two byes allowed, except no byes allowed for the last round. Call the club phone at 619-239-7166 or just email TD Chuck Ensey at chucnglo@aol.com to request a bye. Please get email requests in by 4 PM on Wednesday and phone requests in by 6:30 PM.
