Gambito #421 5/23/09
24 players, including 2 Masters, 5 Experts, 5 Class A, 8 Class B and 4 Class C. McMahon pairings were M/E=3, A=2, B=1, C=0. New player Makaio Krienke (2020) from Florida did well. Also it was good to see Rob Dolan, who only plays once a year or so. Alan Tsoi had a nice day with a draw vs Cyrus Lakdawala, a win over Paul Agron, a loss to Peter Graves and a draw with Leonard Sussman. Nestor Dagamat upset Chris Wonnell in the last round, thereby clinching the U1800 prize with 3 wins. Nestor may soon be headed over 1800, his game has been in great form lately. His only loss was to Madhavan Vajapeyam in the first round. Madhavan tied with Jamieson Pryor for BU2000. Once again Jason Ma finished in the money, although he had to split the U1600 with Tom Kuhn...The event is now rated (see USCF website for updated ratings) and Jason has earned a Class B rating of 1628, congratulations Jason!! At the rate these young players progress, we may see him earn his Class A within two years or less. It is amazing to watch them grow.
Here are the prize winners:

U2400/2200: Makaio Krienke (5), Alan Tsoi (5), Raoul Crisologo (5), $40 each

Next week: June Super Gambito
Gambito #420 5/16/09
22 players, including 5 Masters. We used a McMahon pairing with a slight twist due to a shortage of Experts where M=2, Exp/A=1, B/C=0. Ali Morshedi ruled the day with a perfect 4 wins in a row. New player Quan Bui from the UC San Diego chess club placed well in his first event at our club and raised his rating quite a bit. Jason Ma impressed us all once again by winning the U1600 (four out of the last 5 weeks), but today was special as he upset Expert Daniel Grazian with a very well played game. The kid is on fire and so watch out, you have been warned!
Here were the prize winners.
First Place: Ali Morshedi (6), $100 Second Place: Cyrus Lakdawala (5), $40
U2400: Peter Graves (4), $50 U2200: Leonard Sussman (4), $50
U2000: Chris Wonnell (3 1/2), $50 U1800: Quan Bui (3), $50
U1600: Jason Ma (2 1/2), $50
Total Prizes: $390
Gambito #419 5/09/09
25 players, very good turnout. McMahon pairings used with M=3, Exp=2, A=1, B/C=0. Ali Morshedi drew with Cyrus Lakdawala in Rd 1, beat Peter Graves In Rd 2, but lost to Bruce Baker in Rd 3 and also lost to Jorge Balares in Rd 4. So it seems like our hot new master is not invincible after all (however see Gambito #420). Jorge pushed his rating up to 2204, congratulation to Jorge. He says he was also a master in the 1980's, but that was a LONG time ago. (Don't date your self Jorge!). Another rating breakthrough was made by Fred Cleveland who broke through the 1400 barrier to 1407. Fred has been persistently cheerful through all his tough losses and deserves his honor greatly, way to go Fred! Alan Tsoi had a great day: drew Jorge Balares, beat Leonard Sussman, beat Peter Graves and drew with Cyrus. Wow! Here are all the prize winners:
First Place: Cyrus Lakdawala (6), $100 Second Place: Alan Tsoi (5), $60
U2400: Bruce Baker (5), $60 U2200: Jorge Balares (5), $60
U2000: Nikolay Arutyunov (4), Chris Wonnell (4) and Roberto Aiello (4), $20 each
U1800: Anthony Harbone (3) and Nestor Dagamat (3), $30 each
U1600: Matt Souza (2) and Fred Cleveland (2), $25 each
Total Prizes: $450
