Maybe the Russians got back at him by slipping him a drug to make him crazy, which he clearly was by the end of his life and probably in the middle too. In fact, after he beat Spassky and won the World Championship, everything seemed to change. He had obtained his goal and then he just drifted off into obscurity. He turned down dozens of endorsement deals that could have made him lots of money and spread his fame to a wider audience. He refused to play Karpov and stopped playing altogether. What a shame. And then he went off the deep end with his conspiracy theories and sank deeper and deeper into his own little world that no one else could join. Eventually no one wanted too...
