These are the results for round 2:
Commentary by Rick Aeria in green.
Gunslingers (Master/Expert): 21 entered so far
Board 1 Felix Villarreal (1) - David Hart (1) 1-0
IM Felix Villareal establishes his lead early over NM David Hart who won the recently concluded "Jerry Soelberg" tourney over a very strong field which at one point had IM Felix Villareal, NM Bruce Baker, NM Bassam Shammas as well as current club champion NM Ron Bruno (one draw and withdrew). The position came down to a heavy piece endgame (queens and two rooks) and Hart was defending staunchly but Villareal worked his magic, aided by the clock with the shorter time controls in this event and scored a very big point!
Bd 2 Bassam Shammas (1) - Carey Milton (1/2) 1/2-1/2
Newly minted NM Bassam Shammas is for real! A creditable dtaw with Carey Milton brings "Our Man from Baghdad" closer to confirming his provisional master title. Carey Milton who can be the scourge of the masters in the club could not penetrate Bassam's armor tonight.
Bd 3 Lennart Mathe (1/2) - Raoul Crisologo (1/2) 1-0
Bd 4 Rick Aeria (1/2) - David Delgadillo (1/2) 1-0
My first win after three attempts this year against my dear friend David Delgadillo (a.k.a. "El Mariachi" a character from that great movie "Once Upon a Time in Mexico"). The first encounter as a peaceful draw in the previous Soelberg event, the second encounter was a very painful loss in the San Diego Country Championships which virtually eliminated me from any contention. Naturally, I was burning for vengeance. In a position where I was nursing an advantage but still with plenty of fight left, "El Mariachi" prematurely surrendered.
Bd 5 Jason Qu (1/2) - Jim Humphrey (1/2) 1-0
Jim Humphrey is one of the established experts of this club with a very solid, technical style of play. Tonight he faced one of the young, rising stars of our club, Jason Qu - and lost. It was such an exciting encounter that Jason was requested to submit it for publication. Together with Jason's annotations, here is the game.
At one point it looked that despite the complexity of the position, Jim Humphrey finessed his way to an advantage. Then came the time-scramble and Jason Qu was able to extricate a precious win.
What is even more remarkable, in my opinion, is that Jason, 11, compiled this game in ChessBase and then emailed it over to me. Welcome to the 21st Century!
Bd 6 Theron Pummer (1/2) - Alejandrino Baluran (1/2) 0-1
Bd 7 Dan Altamirano (1/2) - Manuel Herrera (1/2) 0-1
Bd 8 Mario Amodeo (1/2) - Brad Salz (0) 1-0
Poor Brad Salz got victimized by aggressive Mario Amodeo's "150 Attack" Opening. We all sat in the foyer of the office analyzing the system - which can be quite uncomfortable even for good defenders like Brad.
The "150 Attack" (for the player with White pieces) goes something like this 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bf4 g6 4. Nc3 Bg7 5. h4. It was named the "150 Attack" from the British who use a different rating system and British club players rated around 150 are the equivalent of our 1800 rated players.
