Gambito #397

Gambito #397   11/22/08

This event was marred by Carey Milton's health problem, he had to be taken away in an ambulance, but he is under doctor's care now and appears to be stable. See Carey Updates for more info.

26 players today, not including one player who dropped out after the first round incident with an unfinished game and received a refund. James Mahooti made a nice speech and said that Carey would want us to continue playing, so almost everyone else agreed to go on after a half an hour break to calm our nerves.

Today we tried something new that I have been thinking about for a while, a 3 section Gambito with an Open Section for Masters and Experts, a Premier Section for Class A players and a Reserve Section for Class B and below. I have always wanted to try this and I think it went well. The large number of Class A players we have been getting lately makes this possible. If you have an opinion one way or another on this, please post it to the message board. Here's how I see it - Pros: everyone gets to play people closer to their own rating and therefore the prizes awarded are more equitable, as the level of competition for each player should be more evenly distributed. Cons: You don't get a chance to knock off that high rated player you've been dreaming about beating. Also there is more of a need for house players if there is an odd number in each section. (One advantage of a McMahon is you only need 1 house player because there is only one section) The need for house players came up several times today. A good solution here is to have the lowest scoring person in the Open Section play the lowest scoring person in the Premier Section. Since these players are usually already out of contention for a prize, this is a good compromise. The lower rated person gets a full point bye in his section regardless of the outcome of the cross-sectional game.

Total Prizes: $480

Biggest rating point increases, Open: Jorge Balares +43, 2139>2182; Premier: Chuck Ensey +42, 1858>1900; Reserve: Andrew Roberts +135, 1047>1182

On a personal note, I got lucky in several games today (particularly versus Hin, when he gave me a Rook in time trouble in a fairly equal postion) and was able to push my rating up to a new all-time high for me, in uncharted territory at 1900. Previous high for me was 1898. I will probably lose all my games next week! Chuck Ensey
