Fall Swiss Rd 4

Fall Swiss Round 4 of 6      10/22/08   7:00 PM sharp!

This event has 4 sections. All sections will play at our normal time control of 40/90, SD/60 with 5 second delay. Entry fee is only $25, USCF membership of course must be current by the last round (11/05/08).

The winner of the top section will have a free pass into the Club Championship in 2009 without having to qualify through the Markowski Open.  Please email chucnglo@aol.com to join in this event or to request a bye (please email before 4 PM on Wednesday, or call the club phone at 619-239-7166 before 6:30).

Here are the results for Rd 4:

Total # of players so far = 58, plus a few house players

Open Section (Masters, Experts, any Class A players who want to "play up"): 18 players so far

Board 1 Eric Montany (2 1/2) - Felix Villarreal (2 1/2)  0-1

With this win with the black pieces, IM Felix Villareal pulls ahead of the pack to take sole possession of first place with two rounds to go.  Eric Montany came off a bye last week.

But Felix is taking a bye in Round 5, so the race for the Championship spot will tighten up again...

Bd 2  Carl Wagner (2 1/2) - Mario Amodeo (2 1/2)  1/2-1/2

Supermario is having a monster performance this tournament.  This time it is Carl Wagner who squeaks out a draw against a re-energized Mario.

Bd 3  Fausto Robles (2) - Brad Salz (1 1/2)  0-1   The Longest Game of the Night (by far!)

Fausto's flight to glory gets shot down by realist Brad Salz.  Tonight Brad used an advanced b3-pawn and his positional skills to eke out a tough win over Fausto.  See game soon on Cyrus Annotates.

Bd 4  Bassam Shammas (1 1/2)  - Rick Aeria (2)  1/2-1/2

Rick prepared heavily for this game, but still couldn't break through against Barona's imperturable card dealer...

Bd 5  Manuel Herrera (1) - George Zeigler (1)  0-1

George Zeigler finally draws blood and this time the donor is Manuel Herrera.

Bd 7  Carey Milton (1) - Alejandrino Baluran (1)  0-1

For all his heroics in the Saturday Gambito events this month, Milton's Wednesday night results are disappointing to say the least.  Taking nothing away from his rival, the Balladeer's victory-of course.  One theory is that Carey Milton gets motivated when he gets paid and on the Wednesday night events (unlike the Gambitos) the prizes are only awarded on the sixth week.

Bd 8  David Delgadillo (1/2) - Ron Soto (1 1/2)  0-1

Bd 9  Thomas Fries (0) - Jason Qu (1/2)  0-1

Jason has had a rough first half in this tournament but now makes up by beating veteran Tom Fries at the start of the second half.

Premier Section (rated 1800 to 1999): 8 players so far

Bd 10  Dayne Freitag (2 1/2) - Shaun Sweitzer (2)  1-0

After the game I thought I heard Shaun say his Center Counter Defense needs to go "back to the drawing board".

Bd 11  Alfredo Deleon (1 1/2) - Chuck Ensey (2)  0-1

I was properly attired to play the Black pieces and so fortune smiled on me.

Bd 12  Jerry Soelberg (1/2) - Bob Defore (1 1/2)  1/2-1/2

Bye: Erik Marquis (1), Ron Rezendes

Reserve Section (rated 1600 to 1799):  14 players so far

Bd 15  Steve Perry (2 1/2) - Donald Klaas (2 1/2)  1-0

Mr. Harley Davidson motors up to be "the leader of the pack".

Bd 16  Carolina Villarreal (2) - Fred Borges (2)  1-0

I've noticed Fred has trouble with the ladies...

Bd 17  Hector Gonzalez (2) - Brian Kelly (2)  1-0

Bd 18  Maria Elena Villarreal (1 1/2) - Ken Hopper (1 1/2)  1/2-1/2

Ken has been drawing a lot of games lately...I'm not sure why, because I know he is a strong player. Maybe he is just going through a peaceful phase..

Bd 19  Albert Alvarez (1) - Rocio Murra (1)  1-0

Albert arrives from El Paso, Texas. He is filling in as a house player for us. He is a TD and is interested in starting a club that will meet in the Coronado library...

Bd 20  Anthony Harbone (1) - Jerry Kavanau (1)  1-0

Anthony's aggressive style wins another game...

No Show: Derek Cameron (1/2)

Booster Section (rated 1400 to 1599 ): 18 players so far

Bd 22  Tom Kuhn (3) - Chris Calbat (2 1/2)  1-0

Tom takes a big 4-0 lead in this section...

Bd 23  Julian Rodriguez (2) - Joseph Sanna (2)  1-0

Bd 24  Bill Murray (2) - Mark Lawless (2)  0-1

Bd 25  Victor Delgadillo (2) - Michael Ryan (2)  1-0

Bd 26  John Huey (2) - Robert Samuel (1 1/2)  1-0

Bd 27  Darryl Woodson (1) - Keith Wetterer (1/2)  1/2-1/2

Bd 30  Harry LaSalle (1/2) - Karen Kaufman (0)  0-1

Bd 31 Ken Huang (0) - Glenn Rose (0)  1-0

The two newest members of the club, Ken and Glenn, square off in their first rated game.

Bye: Michael Melecher (2),  Monica Ness (1 1/2), Patrick Edwards (1)
