Capablanca Challenge     Round 3      6/06/07       7:00 PM

61 players ...

Round 3 Results

I have emboldened those names who beat a higher rated player

Board 1  Dimitry Kishinevsky - Bruce Baker  0-1

The Longest Game of the Night (by far). Very complicated and interesting too. See this game on Cyrus Annotates

Bd 2  Todd Smith - George Zeigler  0-1

Nice upset. Todd had 3 connected passed pawns for a Bishop, but couldn't make it work against the tenacious play of George Zeigler.

Bd 3  Rick Aeria - John Funderburg  1-0

Another upset, although Rick is not that much lower rated, but knocking off the Club Champion is a heroic feat. The Thunderbird seemed to underestimate Rick's kindside attack but it proved to have plenty of bite. See this fine game on Cyrus Annotates

Bd 4  Lennart Mathe - Alejandro Garamendi  0-1

Bd 5  Richard Gimeno - James Mahooti  1-0

Bd 10  Esteban Escobedo - Ben Barquin  1/2-1/2

This was the only draw this round!!

Bd 11  David Delgadillo - Hercules Madriaga  0-1

Bd 12  Alfredo DeLeon - Chris Borgan  0-1

Bd 13  Robert Defore - Ronald Soto  0-1

Bd 14  Mario Amodeo - Jim Humphrey  1-0

Mario scores another upset... A Knight outplayed a Bishop in this endgame.

Bd 15  Ed Baluran - Fawsi Murra Jr  1-0

A rook sac leads to victory for the Balladeer.

Bd 16  Vincent Broman - Richard Jensen  0-1

Bd 17  Roberto Aiello - Pejman Sagart  1-0

Perry tried to "beat the clock" by showing up very late, but he did make time control and then nearly won the game, but lost tragically in the end.

Bd 18  Ron Rezendes - Damani Fair  1-0

Bd 19  Fausto Robles - Erik Marquis  1-0

Bd 20  Jerry Soelberg - Shaun Sweitzer 0-1

Shaun upsets the "not being careful enough" Jerry, who will not be unhappy if his rating goes under 1800. Jerry tried to win a pawn, but Shaun refuted the pawn grubbing line.

Bd 21  Fawsi Jose Murra - Fred Borges 0-1

Bd 22  Julian Rodriguez - Chuck Ensey  0-1

Bd 23  David Hall - Robert Samuel  0-1

Bd 24  Anthony Harbone - William Murray  1-0

Bd 25  Daniel Bagliazo - Rocio Murra  0-1

Rocio wins a close Rook ending.

Bd 26  Tom Kuhn - Michael Ross  1-0

Bd 27  Karen Kaufman - Ryan Nichols  0-1

Bd 28  Mark Lawless - Christian Garcia  1-0

Bd 29  Manuel San German - Patrick Edwards  1-0

Manuel also showed up very late, but proceeded to win with great force and style.

Bd 30  Monica Ness - Anthony Arciga  1-0

Monica gave Anthony about all he could handle, but somehow lost some material towards the end. She says she hasn't had enough time to devote to chess lately and isn't playing up to her potential.

Byes: David Hart, Manuel Herrera, Dayne Freitag, Tom Fries, Jim Malowney, William Wijaya, Jason Qu, Robert Draper, Morgan Fox

Several players went to the Padre game in the hopes of seeing Trevor Hoffman record his 500th save, an all time record extention (he broke Lee Smith's record a long time ago) and Hell's Bells, he did it! Trevor has shown remarkable inner strength, mental toughness and fighting spirit over his many years in San Diego. Learn from his closer's mentality and put those losses behind you, find out what went wrong with your last game and then move on past it, so you can bounce back stronger than ever the next day.
