This year our County Championship is August 11-12th at the San Diego Chess Club. $3,200 in prizes and only a $50 entry fee (or only $25 for those under 1500 rating). We only have a big tournament like this twice a year (the Senior/Junior Open in April is the other one), so please try to attend, even if you can only do one day, it will still be fun. See our website for details. Sorry for the instrusion, I only send out a message like this twice a year. Thanks, Chuck E.
P.S. Tomorrow there is a simul by GM Joey Antonio at the club (see previous message). Don't miss it!
Hey Chuck,
ReplyDeleteI am gratified that you chose my game with Daniel as the best game submitted in the reserve section. I wanted to point out an interesting possibility at move 28 for White which is what Rudolph Spielmann would call true sacrifice of a queen with 28.Qxh7+ Kxh7 29.hxg5+ Kg8 30.g6. If it was White to move here I think Kg2, Rfh1 and Rh8 is mating. Instead Black has to anticipate this with some sort of luft making with Bd7/Bxa4, Re8 and Kf8 and/or Rf7 and Kf8. It would appear that White can maintain the pressure by playing Kg2, Rh7 and Nh5 and then doubling on the h-file. This gives White another potential inroad with Nxf6 ideas when gxf6 can fail to Rh8+ and R1h7 mate. I was going to play this if Daniel repeated the position with 28.Qg5 Kf7 then 29.Qh5+ and 30.Qxh7+. Sorry, I chickened out over the board. I wanted to look at it a little bit more on Daniel's time and then he played the clunky Rff7.
Thanks once again, Peter
