I checked hotels ALL over the Southern part of Southern California from Imperial Beach up to San Clemente. Many hotels lack a ballroom of sufficient size to host the event, and the big hotels that do have a nice ballroom want an arm and a leg for it. I have been quoted rates as high as $8,000 a night, believe it or not! Who can afford that?? Pechanga was nice in 2006, they gave us a great low rate, but their rooms were so expensive ($220+ a night) that many people skipped the event. This year they wanted a huge amount for the ballroom, so we passed, plus I wanted a hotel with much more affordable rooms anyway. The Crowne Plaza Hotel is a very nice hotel and centrally located in San Diego. At first they wanted way too much for the ballroom, but I loved the location and the ballroom so much I kept going back and negoiating (and badgering) them until they finally agreed to a more reasonable rate. Since then, they have been very nice and I believe they will be wonderful hosts for us... It would be nice to have a big turnout, I am still really hoping for 200 players. Help me make this a reality everyone!Chuck Enseyhttp://censey.multiply.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8845009903340716413.post-91795520281118853132009-08-22T11:55:21.000-07:002009-08-22T11:55:21.000-07:00This prestigious event rotates into the San Diego ...This prestigious event rotates into the San Diego area once every three years. Organizer Chuck Ensey goes all out to bring the very best conditions to make each event in San Diego a memorable experience! In 2006, the Southern California Open was held at the Pechenga Resort in Temecula (Riverside County). This year, Chuck brings this premier Southern California chess event to The Crown Plaza Hotel in Hotel Circle. Looking at advance entries on 8/22/2009, this looks like it is going to be a well-attended event with many local players and we are expecting a good turnout from our friends in Mexico.Rick Aeriahttp://xrickaeriax.multiply.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8845009903340716413.post-68966110142267368612009-08-03T23:03:10.000-07:002009-08-03T23:03:10.000-07:00The advanced entries can be found at westernchess....The advanced entries can be found at westernchess.com.Chuck Enseyhttp://censey.multiply.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8845009903340716413.post-24264691815737883392009-08-02T12:10:17.000-07:002009-08-02T12:10:17.000-07:00Any plans to show advance entries on this website?...Any plans to show advance entries on this website?Bill Conradhttp://bconrad.multiply.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8845009903340716413.post-55352187899690435142009-07-14T22:38:52.000-07:002009-07-14T22:38:52.000-07:00Great News!...The room rate at the Crowne Plaza ha...Great News!...The room rate at the Crowne Plaza has been reduced drom $130 to only $110, making it even more affordable!
