Message from Eliza Eggert: Reminder and Additional information for the tournament this Sunday, May 1st..
With the generous sponsorship of Chess.com and ChessTempo.com and lots of help from Chuck and SDCC, I am organizing a 1-day tournament to raise funds for the non-profit organization Jeans 4 Justice (http://www.jeans4justice.org), whose mission is to end sexual violence through creative education programs. The 4-round tournament will be held this coming Sunday, May 1st, at the club. The time control will be game in 60, which is a little longer than the Gambitos so we'll have to start a little earlier to fit in all 4 rounds. First round begins at 9:45a, so please arrive early to register! A half-point bye will be available, so feel free to skip round one and show up before Round 2 which will start at noon.
This tournament will actually be 2 different tournaments in 1. There will be a USCF rated tournament with Open and Reserve sections for a $20 entry fee. (Reserve is tentatively U1700, but may change based on attendence). It will be 4 rounds with time control of Game in 60. There will also be a separate unrated, less-formal tournament that will only be open to those who either have not ever been rated or have a USCF rating under 1200. I am hoping to encourage some new folks who have never tried a tournament before to come check us out. Entry fee for the unrated tournament will be $8. The unrated part of the tournament will start a few minutes later than the rated to make sure all the new folks are comfortable before getting them going.
At 2p, there will be an "Intro to the game of chess" class for beginners given by our very own Mario Amodeo who has generously donated his time for this. This is the perfect opportunity to get a non-chess friend involved in this great game! I am requesting a $5 donation to participate in the class.
There will also be a raffle, with lots of great items including a nice tournament chess set in a carrying bag, a Saitek digital chess clock, a 1 year Gold membership to ChessTempo.com and more. There will be 2 raffle drawings times, the first just before Round 3 starts at 3p, and the second just before Round 4 starts at 5:15p.

Thank you to everyone who came out to play and help make this tournament a great success! With all of your help, I was able to raise just over $400 for a great organization. Special thank yous to Buddy Morris and Raoul Crisologo who couldn't make it out to the club on Sunday, but still sent along their entry fees to support the cause!
