Simul with a Grandmaster! 1/27 & 1/28

Two Simuls with GM Dejan Bojkov

1/27 (Thursday) & 1/28 (Friday)  7 PM

San Diego Chess Club

Try your luck against a Grandmaster from Bulgaria, rated 2544 FIDE. He recently placed first at the Golden State Open in Corcord CA, tying with Daniel Bryant. This is his first trip to the US and we hope he is having fun and will be back soon!

Thursday night was the first go around for this event and we had 19 participants, a few less than expected but not a bad turnout. It was a small field, but fairly strong, with over one half the players rated over 2000. It started promptly at 7 PM and GM Bojkov got right after it after a few brief announcements. Here were the players in rating order:

2 Masters: Bruce Baker and Kyron Griffith

8 Experts: Dimitry Kishinevsky, Nikolay Arutyunov, Alejandrino Baluran, Alan Tsoi, Jesse Orlowski, Bill Whitney, Antonio Gonzalez and Robert Defore.

3 Class A: Buddy Morris, Chuck Ensey and Carl Newell.

5 Class B: Edgar Lopez, Jim Krooskos, Frank Arias, Steve Perry and Leonardo Villaverde.

1 Class C: Fred Cleveland

Buddy Morris was the first to go down in flames - he transposed a move order and blamed it on being tired. Antonio Gonzalez was the next to drop as he tried to replay a blitz game he had had some success with Dejan yesterday. I (Chuck) was the next to drop, but just before I did, Bill Whitney had earned a draw!! I had to leave at that point, but it looked like Alan Tsoi had a won game, up the exchange and a pawn, and Bruce had drawing chances in a Rook and pawn ending, down a pawn, but it was doubled. Update: Yes Alan Tsoi won and Bruce Baker drew, as did Kyron Griffith. So, final score was 1 win, 3 draws and 15 losses for the home team. A repectable showing for both sides.

So Friday night we did it all over again, but the turnout was much lower, really hardly enough to hold a decent simul. There were a few kids from the Jedi Knights, plus 4 Experts (Arutyunov, Gonzalez Humphrey and Whitney), plus a few Class players (Morris, Perry, Vajapeyam). No one got a win or even a draw under these conditions.

The Markowski Open Rd 5 of 7

The Alina Markowski Open  Round 5 of 7  2/02/11  7 PM

Always call if you can't make a round, no one wants to sit around with no one to play...

The Markowski Open Rd 3 of 7

The Alina Markowski Open  Round 3 of 7  1/19/11  7 PM

Players so far: 95, not including house players Antonio Gonzalez, Phil Skiba, Donald Klaas and Harry LaSalle. Joining us in round 3 were: George Zeigler, Marty Lower and Michael Blandin. We still need 5 more players to get to 100!! Here are some players that might still join us, please give them a nudge if you can: Albert Dumaran, Steve Perry, Jason Qu, Joe Rieker, Pejman Sagart, Gary Tuttle, Keith Wetterer.

The time control for this event is our standard 40/90, SD/60 with 5 second delay. To register for this event, or to request a bye, please email Chuck Ensey at chucnglo@aol.com by 4 PM on Wednesday (and make sure I reply - if I don't then call the club), or call the club telephone at 619-239-7166 by 6:30 PM.

There were 16 players with two wins after two rounds, but then it got tougher for them as they faced much stronger opponents. 3 of the top 8 boards drew, and only two of the higher rated players won (Bruce and Dimitry). Ratings apparently don't mean squat in this event! Now there are only 5 players with 3 wins. Also quite a few lower rated players on the lower boards were able to draw and some even won.

Two byes are available if requested in time (before 6:30 PM the night of the round), but last round byes must be requested before the start of round 2. Entry Fee is $25, and everyone must renew their SDCC membership if they haven't already done so. Club Membership runs on a calendar year basis, so everyone expires on 12/31. Dues are $60 a year, $48 for seniors or for active mililtary, $30 for juniors. There are generous cash prizes throughout the year, so you will have plenty of chances to win that money back and then plenty more.

The time control for this event is our standard 40/90, SD/60 with 5 second delay. To register for this event, please email Chuck Ensey at chucnglo@aol.com or call the club telephone at 619-239-7166. In this event, we all play in one huge section, so the first few rounds will feature large rating differences. Despite this, there is almost always a few upsets, or at least a few draws in the first few rounds. It is your chance to upset a much higher rated player, and if not, at least to learn something from the experience, A loss to a much higher rated player means you will probably only lose only 1 or 2 rating points, so there is practically nothing to lose and a lot to gain. Some people complain about the rating mismatches, but still this event seems to be very popular because we usually have 90 players or so. If you don't want to play a much higher or lower rated player (you will either get paired way up or way down for the first few rounds), then take a bye for the first round or even the first two rounds. Personally, I think it is fun and a good way to get to know the best players in our club.

Players so far: 87

There were 3 upsets tonight, no draws. Biggest upset was Patrick Edwards (1203) over Bruce Charnov (1803), a 600 point rating differential. Bruce misplayed a mating attack by overlooking an intermezzo move. Most of the games had 500 to 600 point spreads. Another upset was Dustin Movius (unr) over Fred Borges (1733) when Fred lost on time, but with an unrated player, we don't really know how good they are yet. Finally there was me, Chuck Ensey (1815), over house player Antonio Gonzalez (2031). I was going to take a bye, but decided to play Antonio and got a bit lucky.
