Unrated players can only win book prizes, but you will get a rating once you play one event. No other memberships are required. Cash prizes are based on the number of entrants and almost all the entry fees are returned in prizes, minus a small fee for the club, $30 to $50 depending on the number of players. Usually we have well over 20 players, so that means $400 and up in prizes.

But it is not about the money, it's about the fun of playing chess. Chess is an art, a science and a competition all rolled into one glorious package. Each game YOU decide where the pieces move, so it's all about making the right decisions based on an ever changing landscape of material, force, position and time. You create your own style of play and learn technique as you go along from better players and from reading books and studying the games and history of chess. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat, it is all here in heart pounding brain teasers. And now with the advent of strong computer programs, you can study your game afterwards and find out where you went wrong in the myriad of possible moves you had to choose from. You learn more from losses than from wins, but oh those wins can be so exciting and satisfying...

And here we have the sentiments of a one Mr. Tom Petty:

It's good to be King, if just for a while. To be there in velvet, yeah, to give 'em a smile.

It's good to get high and never come down. It's good to be King of your own little town.

Yeah the world would swing if I were King. Can I help it if I still dream from time to time...

It's good to be King and have your own way. Get a feeling of peace at the end of the day

And when your bulldog barks and your canary sings, You're out there with winners

It's good to be King.  Yeah I'll be King when dogs get wings

Can I help it if I still dream from time to time...

It's good to be King and have your own world. It helps to make friends, it's good to meet girls.

A sweet little Queen who can't run away. It's good to be King, whatever it pays...

Excuse me if I have some place in my mind where I go from time to time...

**********************************************************************************************************************

36 players total

Open Section, 21 players: including 7 Masters: Cyrus Lakdawala, Jeff Arnold, Ken Arnold, Bruce Baker, Giovanni Carreto, Kyron Griffith, Romeo Ignacio; 7 Experts: Varun Krishnan, Raoul Crisologo, Peter Hodges, Ben Barquin, Aaron Wooten, Carey Milton, Jamieson Pryor; 7 Class A: Madhavan Vajapeyam, Robert Defore, Chris Wonnell, Ivan Salazar Migoni, Pejman Sagart, Joselito Quiba, Chuck Ensey

Reserve Section, 15 players: 3 Class B: Kimberly Ogden, Edgar Lopez, Anthony Harbone; 3 Class C: Jerry Qu, Alexander Blank, Fred Cleveland; 9 Class D/E: Rex Pimentel, James Hillard, Keric Rivas, Haziq Siddiqi, Irina Nizmutdinova, Jesse Wang, Ajay Krishnan, Matthew Wang, Issac Vega (unrated)

4 players called in sick (Scott Householder and James Mitchell) or otherwise couldn't make it (Aaron Householder and Tom Kuhn), so with them we would have had the hoped-for 40 players. It was surprising to me that only 3 Class B players showed up, plus only 3 C's, but lots of D/E's. Haziq had a good showing, I think his rating should now go over 1400. He defeated Edgar Lopez in the first round which won the best game prize for the Reserve Section. (I will post it later). Ajay Krishnan also did well, winning $75 in his first ever Gambito Open! Following in his brother's footsteps I suppose. Ajay defeated house player Andrew Negus in round 2 when in a dead drawn position Andrew, instead of repeating the position and blocking Ajay's King, went for a win with an ill-fated plan to advance on the Kingside, but Ajay was able to thereby penetrate with a faster attack on the Queenside and win. I just happened to be watching that one from the side. Another upset was won by Irina Nizmutdinova, fresh from a tour of Europe, who came back to defeat strong Class B player Anthony Harbone in round 3, however she lost to Ajay in the fourth round, the young kid was on fire...although he needs to learn to stop talking during the games!

Cyrus said his back was acting up, even before the first round, but he managed to win 3 in a row to start, including wins over Bruce Baker and Giovanni Carreto, but then ran into the Arnold brothers, who always give him trouble and he settled for two draws. Giovanni beat Bruce and Ken Arnold. Kyron lost only to Ken Arnold and beat Romeo and Raoul in the last rwo rounds.

Note: Next Saturday, 10/09/10 is National Chess Day, so we will celebrate by having a Super Gambito with $1,000 in guaranteed prizes ($25 entry fee, 4 rounds starting at 10:30)
