Tribute Round 1

A Tribute to Anderssen, Round 1 of 5, 6/04/08  7 PM

This is a 5 round event using the McMahon Swiss pairing system. Masters and Experts will start with 4 points, Class A players with 3, B with 2, C with 1 and Class D and below (under 1400) start with no extra bye points. The idea is that this way, there is just one big section, but the players are separated into classes by giving them bye points depending on their rating. That way the strongest players have to play each other and the lesser players don't have to worry about getting beat up by someone much higher rated. In general most people will end up playing someone close to their own rating which is what most people enjoy. Of course, like any Swiss, if you keep winning you will play tougher and tougher opponents as the tournament progresses, but it is unlikely that a Class D player, for instance, will ever have to play an Expert in this event. But not impossible - can you see how? (If the Expert loses all four of his first games and the Class D player wins his first four, they could be paired in round 5, but this is unlikely. If it happens, maybe the Expert isn't really that strong, or conversely the Class D is way under-rated). No pairing system is perfect, but the SDCC has used the McMahon successfully for years and we have found it to be a generally fair and good system. One extra benefit is that we only need 1 house player at most (if we have an odd number of players), so it usually gives quite equally matched and good pairings.

Time control will be our usual 40/90, G/60 with 5 second delay. Entry Fee is $25  Only 1 bye available.

[Next tournament, the Summer Swiss, starting July 9th, will we have a Slow (40/90, G/60) and a Fast (G/90) section.]

Bd 1  Todd Smith (4) - Carey Milton (4)  0-1

This was the Longest Game of the Night, nice game by Carey, Todd was in trouble for much of the game.

Bd 2  Ed Baulran (4) - John Funderburg  1/2-1/2

The Player of the Month step ups again. When you are on a roll, you just ride the wave...

Bd 3  Rick Aeria (4) - Manuel Herrera (4)  1/2-1/2

Manuel was up a pawn in a Rook and Pawn endgame, but Rick was Queening first. The second to the longest game of the night.

Bd 4  Robert Defore (3) - Mario Amodeo (3)  0-1

Mario played a nice game and had Bob in very serious time trouble and Bob did lose on time, but that really wasn't the deciding factor, Mario seemed to be in control of the game with lots of threats.

Bd 5  Bassam Shammas (3) - Jason Qu (3)  1-0

Bassam proves he really does belong on the top boards, and next week he gets to play a Master!

Bd 6  Ron Rezendes (3) - Fawsi Murra Jr (3)  1/2-1/2

A very long game that finally ended with a split point. I joked with Ron - What took you so long, I did the same thing in half an hour!

Bd 7  Thirunathan Sutharsan (3) - David Delgadillo  1-0

Bd 8  Shaun Sweitzer (3) - Alfredo Deleon (3)  1-0

This was an amazing game. Shaun sacrificed a Rook to Queen a pawn. The game should be submitted.

Bd 9  Chuck Ensey (3) - Jerry Soelberg (3)  1/2-1/2

A 15 move draw, but both players felt they needed to repeat moves to ward off the threats.

Bd 10  Fred Borges (2) - Joel Batchelor (2)  1-0

Fred joked that he "felt like a criminal" when someone accused him of pulling off a swindle...

Bd 11  Fawsi Jose Murra (2) - Erik Marquis (2)  0-1

The Bishop of opposite colors ending was popular tonight, I saw at least 3 of them, but Erik managed to win this one!

Bd 12  Rocio Murra (2) - Vincent Broman (2)  0-1

Bd 13  Anthony Harbone (2) - Jerry Kavanau (1)  0-1

Bd 14  Morgan Fox (1) - Michael Ryan (1)  0-1

Bd 15  Ray Viernes (1) - Mark Lawless (1)  0-1

Bd 16  Bill Murray (1) - Tom Kuhn (1)  1-0

Bd 17  Robert Samuel (1) - Karen Kaufman (1)  1/2-1/2

Bd 18  Patrick Edwards (0) - Donald Klaas (0)  0-1

Bd 19  Chris Calbat (0) - Keith Wetterer (0)  1-0

Bd 20  Maria Murra (0) - Ralph White (0)  0-1

Bd 21  Arnold Berlin (0) - Guadalupe Galvez (0)  1-0

Bd 22  Stephen Tuba (0) - Darryl Woodson (0)  0-1

Darryl gets his first rated win!! Congrats!

Bye: Bruce Baker (4), Lennart Mathe (3), Nathanael Plapp (3), Robert Draper (2), Caley Anderson (2), Steve Perry (1)
