Soelberg Rd 4

The Jerry Soelberg Open  Rd 4 of 6  on Wednesday 7/30/08

Jerry Wins Trophy in May of 2008                  71 Players in this event (not including house players)

In the Fast Section Carey Milton, David Hart and Rick Aeria (in tie break order) are tied for First Place with 3 1/2 points. Hot on their heels are Bruce Baker and Chuck Ensey with 3 points. Lurking in a pack behind Bruce and Chuck are 6 horses with 2 1/2 points: James Mahooti, Ed Baluran, Felix Villarreal, Bassam Shammas, Varun Krishnan and Fawsi Murra Jr.  With  two more turns to go, it could be a wild photo finish! Trifecta, Pick Six or Quirky Quinnella, it's your bet...

In the Slow Section there is also a 3 way tie for First Place between George Zeigler, Jim Humphrey and Manuel Herrera, all with 3 1/2. Eight players now have 3 out of 4: Fausto Robles, Robert Draper, Thomas Fries, Robert Defore, Buddy Morris, Jamieson Pryor, Mario Amodeo and Joel Batchelor....

Fast Section (G/90) - 29 players

Board 1  David Hart (2 1/2) - Ed Baluran (2 1/2)  1-0

Ed Baluran showed up in some colorful outfit of undetermined cultural origin.  We coaxed him into a picture for posterity.

Bd 2  Fawsi Murra Jr (2 1/2) - Rick Aeria (2 1/2)  0F-1F

Fawsi please let us know if you are still in the tournament....

Bd 3  Carey Milton (2 1/2) - James Mahooti (2 1/2)  1-0

This looked like a draw to me, but Carey pulled his usual magic stunt, producing a rabbit out of thin air (and then eating it)

Bd 4  Theron Pummer (2) - Bruce Baker (2)  0-1

At first glance, I thought Bruce was down a Queen for a Rook, but it was a sac to get a new Queen from an unstoppable Rook Pawn...  Still, Theron played a good game and can be proud of hanging in there for a long time...

Bd 5  Jason Qu (2) - Chuck Ensey (2)  0-1

With one horrible blunder, Jason lost his Queen AND a Bishop! Ooops... sounds more like something I would do, but it was me on the lucky side tonight...

Bd 6  T. Sutharsan (1 1/2) - Felix Villarreal (1 1/2)  0-1

Heeee's Baaaaaack, watchout everybody. Varun gets the honor next week....

Bd 7  Bassam Shammas (1 1/2) - Dayne Freitag (1 1/2)  1-0

It was a Queen versus 2 Rooks in this close battle...

One of the more entertaining battles tonight.  Here is the game.

Bd 8  Varun Krishnan (1 1/2) - Vincent Broman (1 1/2)  1-0

This game is annoatated by Cyrus and Vince and posted on Cyrus Annotates   Vincent lost a piece and couldn't quite hang in there with a only few pawns for it...

Bd 10  David Delgadillo (1 1/2) - Michael Nagaran (1)  0-1

Mike makes a rare appearance at our club, he is usually a North County man...

Michael Nagaran double dares tactician David Delgadillo to come and slay his "Dragon".  Playing the sharp Yugoslav variation, David whips out a scary sacrificial attack.  The slugfest seemed to be only on the Kingside.  Once the queens were exchanged, Nagaran held on to the extra material and drove the point home!

Bd 11  Ron Rezendes (1) - Tom Kuhn (1)  1-0

Tom played well, but still went down in flames...

Bd 12  Mark Lawless (1) - Jerry Soelberg (1)  1/2-1/2

Jerry said Mark played WAY better than his 1465 rating... Mark can be sneaky, he was up the exchange and I think even more until Jerry fought back and offerred a draw. Mark wisely took it, you don't want to get into and endgame with Jerry, trust me...

Bd 13  Chris Calbat (1) - Robbie Coda (0)  1-0

A touch move violation caused a quick end to this game. Robbie's game is a bit rusty and he thought he could change his move if he hadn't punched his clock. Sorry Robbie, that's only in Blitz...

Bd 14  Patrick Edwards (1/2) - Robert Reed (1/2)  0-1  I think this was the first game over...

Bd 15  Tom Lavoy (0) - Joseph Serapelia (0)  0-1   Joseph filled in as a house player once again, thanks Joe

Slow Section (40/90, G/60) - 42 players

Bd 16  Jim Humphrey (3) - George Zeigler (3)  1/2-1/2

Bd 17  Manuel Herrera (3) - Tom Fries (2 1/2)  1/2-1/2

Bd 18  Mario Amodeo (2) - Damani Fair (2)  1-0

Bd 19  Ray Viernes (2) - Robert Defore (2)  0-1

Bd 20  Fausto Robles (2) - Fred Borges (2)  1-0

Bd 21  Robert Draper (2) - Alfredo Deleon (2)  1-0

The Longest Game of the Night.... Alfredo has been involved in many of those....

Bd 22  Jamieson Pryor (2) - Caley Anderson (2)  1-0

Bd 23  Buddy Morris (2) - Brian Kelly (2)  1-0

Bd 24  Joel Batchelor (2) - Ryan Nichols (2)  1-0

Bd 27  Maria Elena Villarreal (1 1/2) - Michael Ryan (1)  1-0

Bd 28  Pejman Sagart (1) - Jesse Turner (1)  1-0

This was a house game, Jesse was visting from Fresno

Bd 29  Robert Samuel (1) - Rocio Murra (1)  0-1

Bd 30  Arnold Berlin (1) - Hector Gonzalez (1)  0-1

Bd 31  Steve Perry (1) - Donald Klaas (1)  0-1

Bd 32  Santiago Rubio-Fernaz (1) - Bill Murray (1)  1-0
