Open Section
Board 1 Ed Baluran (1) - Todd Smith (1) 1/2-1/2
Bd 2 Mariano Lozano (1) - Rick Aeria (1) 1/2-1/2
The opening began as a French Defence 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 And after Mariano elected to play 3. exd5 (The Exchange Variation), outlooker Master David Hart - with all the dry wit of a veteran jokester wondered aloud later, it there was a Chess Informant symbol for "chicken"? Nonetheless, after failing to react correctly to Mariano's pugnacious but anti-positional c4-c5 advance, White built up a dangerous spatial advantage and could-have and should-have won when I offered an unsound sacrifice. With Master David Hart's lucid post-mortem analysis, he pointed out an advanced idea: a sacrifice of the exchange for only a pawn and then to follow up positionally. I had rejected the sac because I was only looking for a tactical solution. So thus, I leaned something from this game... the great divide between a true master and an expert.
See game here. Special thanks to Master David Hart and Mariano Lozano for going over the game in post-mortem analysis.
