Fall Swiss Round 5 of 6 10/29/08 7:00 PM sharp!
This event has 4 sections. All sections will play at our normal time control of 40/90, SD/60 with 5 second delay. Entry fee is only $25, USCF membership of course must be current by the last round (11/05/08).
The winner of the top section will have a free pass into the Club Championship in 2009 without having to qualify through the Markowski Open. Please email chucnglo@aol.com to join in this event or to request a bye (please email before 4 PM on Wednesday, or call the club phone at 619-239-7166 before 6:30).
Here are the results from Rd 5:
Total # of players so far = 58, plus a few house players
Open Section (Masters, Experts, any Class A players who want to "play up"): 18 players so far
Tournament leader IM Felix Villareal was the featured "invisible man" as he showed his supernatural prescience by taking a timely bye/draw and still maintained the sole lead with 4-1!
Board 1 Carl Wagner (3) - Eric Montany (2 1/2) 1/2-1/2
There is a new "JAMES BOND 007" in the club tonight and he is played by Eric Montany. After Eric's rather abrupt loss to IM Felix Villareal last week he took on a QUANTUM OF SOLACE by drawing with DR. EVIL played by Carl Wagner.
See for yourself if Eric qualifies as the new James Bond. Should Daniel Craig look worried and try to get a day job now?
Bd 2 Mario Amodeo (3) - Rick Aeria (2 1/2) 0-1
After an over-caffienated, near steroidal streak of heroics in the first four rounds, SuperMario comes dressed to the party as...a pinata! Getting into the spirit of things, I give Mario's costume ("position") a few really wicked whacks. What do I get? Out rolls one measly piece of candy....a lousy pawn! Anxious to get to the mother lode of goodies, I try too hard and give SuperMario a golden opportunity for real counterplay. Mario, apparently dazed from the clubbing does nothing to punish my impetuousity and I walk home with my bag of candy! Mmmmmm....chewy!
Bd 3 Brad Salz (2 1/2) - Dan Altamarino (2 1/2) 1-0
After a fumbling start Brad Salz must have received a dose of gamma radiation (we sincerely hope it was not a lethal dosage) because he came on as THE INCREDIBLE HULK ploughing through Fausto last week and sweeping aside Dan "IRONMAN" Altamarino in an impressive display of chess power.
Bd 4 Ron Soto (2 1/2) - Bassam Shammas (2) 1-0
Ron Soto pulled a magical DAVID COPPERFIELD "now-you-see-it-and-now-you-don't" act on Bassam to spirit away a piece and hand the club's newest master a painful loss.
Bd 5 George Zeigler (2) - Jim Humphrey (2) 1/2-1/2
George Zeigler tried to play the EXECUTIONER to Jim Humphrey's rendition of the HEADLESS HORSEMAN but found out that he had no target so the club's two most solid experts called it a draw.
In the ensuing post-mortem, Carl "Dr. Evil" Wagner tried to demonstrate a win for Zeigler but the fans liked Slimer's (eh..Carey Milton's) analysis better.
Bd 6 Alejandrino Baluran (2) - Fausto Robles (2) 1-0
Ed "The Chess Balladeer" Baluran forgot to dress up for this Halloween party but Ed can be readily forgiven as he dresses up for Halloween every other night, if you know what I mean
So here is a rare shot of the Balladeer in normal street attire. Rather handsome chap won't you say? The glitzy watch around Ed's wrist was so mesmerizing for poor Fausto that the game took on a rather funereal pallor.
Bd 7 Manuel Herrera (1) - Carey Milton (1) 0-1
After an indifferent start, our hero Carey Milton comes on strong like the GHOSTBUSTERS and slimes poor Manuel Herrera.
Bd 8 Tom Fries (0) - David Delgadillo (1/2) 1/2 -1/2 Tom is filling in as a house player
Bye: Felix Villarreal (3 1/2), Jason Qu (1 1/2)
Premier Section (rated 1800 to 1999): 8 players so far
Bd 10 Bob Defore (2) - Dayne Freitag (3 1/2) 1-0
Bd 11 Chuck Ensey (2) - Shaun Sweitzer (2) 1/2-1/2
Bd 12 Erik Marquis (1 1/2) - Alfredo Deleon (1 1/2) 0-1
Bd 13 Jerry Soelberg (1/2) Full Point Bye
Reserve Section (rated 1600 to 1799): 14 players so far
Bd 15 Carolina Villarreal (3) - Steve Perry (3 1/2) 1-0
Bd 16 Hector Gonzalez (3) - Donald Klaas (2 1/2) 0-1
Bd 17 Brian Kelly (2) - Fred Borges (2) 0-1
Longest Game of the Night - Fred's lone rook beat Brian's lone knight!
Bd 18 Albert Alvarez (1) - Anthony Harbone (2) 1-0
Bd 19 Jerry Kavanau (1) - Rocio Murra (1) 1/2-1/2
Bye: Maria Elena Villarreal (2)
Booster Section (rated 1400 to 1599 ): 18 players so far
Bd 21 Tom Kuhn (4) - Victor Delgadillo (3) 1-0
Bd 22 Mark Lawless (3) - Julian Rodriguez (3) 0-1
Bd 23 Chris Calbat (2 1/2) - Michael Melcher (2 1/2) No show for both players! Spooky!
Bd 24 Joseph Sanna (2) - John Huey (2) 0-1
Bd 25 Michael Ryan (2) - Bill Murray (2) 1-0
Bd 26 Robert Samuel (1 1/2) - Patrick Edwards (2) 1-0
Bd 27 Karen Kaufman (1) - Darryl Woodson (1 1/2) 1-0
Bd 28 Keith Wetterer (1) - Harry LaSalle (1/2) 0-1
Bd 29 Kirk Branner (1) - Ken Huang (1) 1/2-1/2
Bd 30 Maria Murra (0) - Glenn Rose (0) 1-0
