Open Section (Masters, Experts, any Class A players who want to "play up"):

Board 1 Felix Villarreal - Lennart Mathe  1-0

Bd 2  Manuel Herrera - Carl Wagner  0-1

NM Carl Wagner returns after a long hiatus and shows that he still has the "Right Stuff" in stopping a resurgent Manuel Herrera who has been doing very well at the club lately.

Standing: Pejman Sagart, Jim Humphrey, Brad Salz.  Seated: Carl Wagner and Eric Montany on 10/01/08

Bd 3  Bassam Shammas - Jim Humphrey  0-1  Longest Game of the Night

This one has my head shaking.  When I last peeked at the position it looked like NM Bassam Shammas had the rook and pawn endgame all wrapped up for another shiny win, but Jim Humphrey somehow managed to turn the tables around.

Update from 10/08/2008: Jim Humphrey button-holed me this evening and maintained that at no point during his game was he in danger of losing. I may have to agree with him but wouldn't it be nice if he submitted the game with his annotations?

Bd 4  Eric Montany - Brad Salz  1-0

Bd 5  Ron Soto - Carey Milton  0-1

Bd 6  Rick Aeria - Fausto Robles  1/2-1/2

Fausto demonstrated the courage to repeat the McCutcheon variation ( 1. e4  e6   2.  d4  d5   3. Nc3  Nf6   4.  Bg5   Bb4  ) to the French Defence which I had lost to Felix Villareal recently.  After  5.  e5  h6  I wanted to avoid the Main Line  6.  Bd2 and John Watson's reprise of 6.  Be3!? which I was unsuccessful against Felix.  thereupon I selected  the clearly inferior 6.  Bxf6 ?! which gives Black easy equality, if not more.  Feisty Fausto more than held his end up and in a dead level rook and pawn endgame, I proposed a draw which was accepted.

Bd 7  Jason Qu - Dan Altamirano  0-1

Bd 8  Alejandrino Baluran - David Delgadillo  1-0

Bd 9  Mario Amodeo - Arash Nahavandi  1-0

Premier Section (rated 1800 to 1999):

Bd 11  Pejman Sagart - Bob Defore 1/2-1/2

Bye:  Alfredo Deleon, Shaun Sweitzer

Reserve Section (rated 1600 to 1799):

Bd 14  Ken Hopper - Rocio Murra  0-1

Bd 15  Anthony Harbone - Fred Borges  0-1

Bd 17  Carolina Villarreal - Brian Kelly  1-0

Bd 18  Hector Gonzalez -Derek Cameron  1-0

Bd 19  John Huey - Steve Perry  0-1

Bye: Jerry Kavanau, Maria Elena Villarreal
